Elon Musk reveals the all-new Tesla Model S Plaid

We’ve known that Elon Musk was teasing the new Tesla Model S Plaid from January, but on Friday Elon Musk revealed the car in its final form.

There were no huge surprises from Tesla. It came up with the newest iteration of the Model S, which features a new battery pack design, an improved heat pump, carbon over-wrapped rotors on the motors and a new record for drag coefficient of 0.208. Musk also emphasized as perhaps a poke at up and comer Lucid Motor. The Lucid Air, which is slated to go into production this year, has a drag coefficient of 0.21.

This four-door electric sedan goes from 0 to 60 in 1.99 seconds, which Musk says breaks the two-second barrier than no production car has ever been able to break. It produces 1,020 horsepower, has a top speed of 200 miles per hour(with proper tire) and can complete a quarter mile in 9.23 seconds, according to Musk and the Company’s website.

It can travel 390miles(627.6 Km) on a single charge, but Musk added the car can go to 412miles() with dual motor configuration(The Model S Plaid has a tri-motor set-up).

The improved charging speed gives drivers 187miles() of range in 15minutes. The New Model S also has a new battery pack, but Musk didn’t elaborate more on that in detail. He spent considerable amount of time describing the carbon sleeve rotor for the motor. The car uses the first production electric motors with carbon sleeved rotors(They are magnetic rotors which helps in controlling the centrifugal force in wheels and since it is carbon-fibre it is more efficiently used because of its light weight and hard nature), which required Tesla to develop new manufacturing machine to achieve. The end result is a motor that goes up to 20,000RPM.

The new heat pump that powers the Plaid’s HVAC(Heating, Ventilation and Air Condition which is for the automotive interior) system has 30% better cold weather range and requires 50% less energy for cabin heating and freezing conditions, meaning little degradation in cold weather, said Musk.

The interior of the Car is very much improved than exterior. It has got a 17 inch cinematic Display with 2200x1300 resolution, ultra-bright, true colour and exceptional responsiveness, the new centre display is the best screen to watch anywhere. The steering of the driver is very much futuristic, Musk calls it the ultimate focus on driving, its steering is similar to airplane’s steering.

The back seats are completely redesigned, three adults can fit, with extra legroom, headroom and a stowable armrest with integrated storage and wireless charging. There is 10 inch screen also for the back passenger where they can play games with the wireless console, consume media and more.

It could connect to multi-device via Bluetooth, wireless and also have USB-C charging sockets for everyone with enough power to charge your tablets and laptop. It has 22-speaker, 960-watt audio system with active noise cancelling.

The new autopilot feature is also present as we discussed in the last blog on Tesla Autopilot Explained. DO CHECK OUT!

Elon had also announced the Higher of Model S Plaid i.e. Model S Plaid+ but then it was officially off the table because the Plaid speed itself was so good that Plaid+ was not needed.
